Starting up a watch manufacture

Oct 30, 2012,16:58 PM

I was wondering if any of you had any experience or knowledge as to what it takes from a business perspective to start a high-end watch manufacture, perhaps along the lines of an FPJ, Laurent Ferrier, or similar.  I understand that one probably needs to frame the question a bit better (not to mention having a motivated and talented watch artisan) but I was largely wondering what type of start-up costs are involved, what are the typical margins in the business, is it a profitable venture or a labour of love, time and equipment to get going and so forth.  Any insights on how existing AHCI members funded themselves and/or view the business would be of interest.

Disclaimer: I'm hoping as this is about the watch business it is wholly divorced from the taboo of talking about watch prices, please don't meander too deep into those waters!  This question is for general interest - please move to HoMe if I got the forum wrong.

All the best
