Yes, I heard the same story indeed...
However, I sincerely doubt anyone (read: company) can actually patent the use of titanium for a balance wheel, in the same way that one cannot patent milk as a health drink ;-0)
The usage/functionality 'titanium balance wheel 's too broad and not specific enough to insure a patentable entity.
The only thing the Swatch group really can do in this issue is intimidate others by threatening litigation with their massive firepower so that no-one will bother to try to use it.
So you would win against them, but go bankrupt in the process....Goal achieved from the viewpoint of Swatch.
They are being rather pathetic in my view. If they want to patent things, let them do that with real inventions.
If a big multinational went again them, they would never win (or perhaps even bother to litigate).
However, if they were to patent a very specific titanium based alloy for that application, that might narrow the patent enough to make it 'stick'.
