Whether you can or not...
...it's not as pleasant an experience as winding a hand-wound watch. There's a curious deadness with all automatics I have tried. You also don't seem to get the finely articulated clicking noise.
Further, many automatics have crowns which aren't optimised for hand winding. My old AP Royal Oak 5402 with a sharp hexagonal crown used to leave my forefinger and thumb sore. After a service it got a little easier.
