I get the feeling that a Sonnerie, and maybe to a lesser extent a repeater, create the sense of introspection. Of making one aware of time while in the comfort of solitude.
Especially since people are so bothered by ambient noise. i.e. cell phones, computers, etc... having a chiming watch while working in close proximity with somebody might come off as rude!
I have the good fortune of having an office that faces a late 19th century Bell Tower that of course chimes the quarters and hours. And I have the same effect that I usually take notice of it's presence while working quietly alone. It's something magical...
