Ronald, I’m currently at the start of one such downsizing.

The most basic of explanations is “too many watches”, and so some consolidation is needed. Some incomings over the last few years were not offset with outgoings and so the time has come to correct the balance.
But a desire for more focus is also a driving factor. I have a several sub collections (if we can call them that) and some pieces don’t fit within any of those and so perhaps it’s tome to move them on.
A third element is moving on those I don’t wear. I have many watches which don’t get regular wear BUT this is not because I no longer like them or they no longer provide the satisfaction they initially did. For those watches that don’t get regular wrist time BECAUSE they no longer appeal to me as tastes have changed and knowledge increased then these are the ones to move on to a better home.
Finally, I wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t state that there is a temptation to move some pieces which today command crazy premiums to my purchase price and / or current retail. So far I have resisted this as the specific watches have some meaning to me and / or otherwise for within my collection.
