Like what Groucho Marx said...

"I wouldn't join a club that would have me as a member!" - Groucho Marx.

Of course, he was referring to discrimication agaist Jews but the same feeling applies.

I used to go mainly to SIHH but it was very much a clique and discriminatory place. "Snobby" was used by some of your interviewees.
Mostly, it was about money because despite their declared "independence" of individual brands in the Richemont Group, all the CEOs and CFOs report to the same President and Money God. When you were invited, you have to admit to feeling superior to the plebians at Baselworld or especially the Geneva Week "leeches" (Not my quotation).

Some used the original presence of other brands like Girard- Perregaux, Audemars Piguet, Parmigiani, Greubel Forsey, Ralph Lauren and Richard Mille to demonstrate "independence" but 3 facts stood out.
1) Those independent brands complied with the Richemont social norms and acted like them; no independent thought emerged.
2) Many of those independent brands are part-owned by existing SIHH brands or are suppliers of components and technology to SIHH brands or family owners were personal friends of the family that owned Richemont.
3) When those family ties were broken by deaths or merger-acqusitions, they lost G-P back to Basel. Despite being partly owned by Richemont, Ralph Lauren Watch & Jewellery left SIHH; the first independent action there.

SIHH had to change to survive so they "invited" some independents to join. How independent are they? That's an offer you can't refuse. After decades of scrabbling for crumbs falling off the SIHH table by renting space in hotels and halls around Geneva to entice visitors for a few hours away from SIHH, suddenly they get to sit at the table?!?
Without paying the full fees? YES....P-L-E-A-S-E.

Nowadays, I go to Baselworld because the people are friendly and really care about sharing their watches.....er......except maybe Rolex and Breitling, whose fortress pavilions are a bit discriminatory smile

Just my personal observations that possibly mean that I'm going to be banned from SIHH........or am I now more desireable as a visitor since I am banned?

Regards,
MTF

What PuristS Said When Asked If They Preferred BaselWorld or SIHH

When it comes to fine mechanical wristwatches, everyone looks to Basel and Geneva to see what the genius watchmakers of the world have been busy working on all year and in some cases for the past several years. These watch shows are an authority in techni...

Very interesting topic, Ping. In the meantime some interesting brands joined the SIHH.

Girard Perregaux and Ulysse Nardin, two brands which are very dear to my heart. It would be interesting to read the brands thoughts on that topic. Best, Nicolas

I read about that.

That would be a very interesting perspective indeed. Hmm...looks like I will have to do another follow-up on the topic.

Great read...

And can agree with a lot of comments. I do around 4 days at both shows each year for quite a few years... its hard to choose between the 2 of them as they are so different. They compete but also have totally unique atmospheres... Like the difference of go...

Thank you for your comments Andrew!

I should have gotten your perspective for this article! 4 days each is a lot I know but there is so much to cover I'm sure. I just remember that after a while, it started to get repetitive and tiring going from one to the next and all over again the next ...

Keeping it fresh... more like keeping me fresh...

Late nights and little sleep is the hardest thing! Actually at both shows, I don't go to see the watches... I go to meet up with friends, watchmakers, journalists and industry people to catch up and find out what is happening! It's all about the p people....

Thank you for sharing that Melvyn. I guess it's business, politics and a constantly evolving arena. So where should one go to get the most fulfilling and true "Purist" sense of spirit? A hall? a corner, a watchmaker? a table? Love to read more of your tho...

Great post!

I have only been and quite often to the SIHH and find everything over there very professional and relaxing. Especially when you need to work or eat in between appointments. But i can't compare it to Basel World where I hope to go, for the first time, in 2...

That is awesome Geo!

What a fortunate opportunity to a chance to compare the two. Looking forward to reading about it here.

Yes they are quite a trek from here as well. Thank you Ken!

It's going to be interesting to see how SIHH changes next year with the addition of paid public entrance fees

I'm very curious to see how things will pan out next year at SIHH. Hopefully for the better than for the worse! - AT

SIHH is more ... Purist ...

Being there and is a very pleasant show. Unique IMHO. I hear, never being there, that Basel feels like a busy airport and this turns me off. Cheers, Nilo
