When I came up with the brand concept, I felt the British had a lock on the Gentleman Adventurer Archetype. This is my first drawing of Edward Wellington, Wellington & Cromwell's Mickey Mouse/Ronald McDonald.
The RL was by no means in shoo-in. In fact, in March 2016, I'd had a good run at Poker at Parx near Philadelphia and was on my way to the Tourneau at the King of Prussia Mall with 52 $100 bills in my pocket to purchase a NOS PAM337, a 42mm Radiomir that had been sitting in the certified pre-owned case since Christmas 2013.
The salesman I had been talking to about this watch couldn't find it in the case and his colleague told him a dentist had purchased the watch a few hours ago. Holy &(%%^I^^! I mean think about it, the watch was a new old stock watch that didn't sell before being discontinued by Panerai then exiled to the certified pre-owned case where it sat for two years. I had finally made a decision and had enough money to purchase the watch and the very same day someone purchases the watch mere hours before I get to the store? I took it as a omen that the little Radiomir and I were not meant to be, despite it fitting my 6.3" wrist.
The RL automotive chronometer combines my favorite watch design elements in a coherent piece. Referencing the photo below you can see the steampunk rivets from the V. Halter, the concentric sector dial type targeting reticle circles from the B-Uhr Pilot watch, and the beautiful elm burl wood, all combine beautifully in the RL watch.
Even though I loved the watch, it took some encouragement from you guys, especially MTF, to help me make what I already knew to be the right decision for me.
