Two come to mind from long ago.

First was 1969.  No watch involved but my old-fashioned wooden surf board plus very little cash for a large frame tent plus a load of camping gear.  He needed the space and I needed a holiday.

Second was 1973 between two mature and impoverished students.  A 9 years old, originally his 21st birthday gifted watch that had given up working where Watches of Switzerland had quoted him a repair cost nearly twice the original purchase price; in exchange for all the cash I had in my pockets, which would now buy about three cups of coffee.  Plus I also gave him a cheque for £1.50 (about US$1.18).  The local Oxford AD arranged the service for me at a cost of nearly twice what I had paid my colleague for that watch.  I still have that watch as a pride and joy, shown here a few times.

Oh, the watch?  A steel Omega Constellation calibre 561 and its original BOR bracelet.  I also still have that cleared cheque as a momento.

I feel much better. I recently found an envelope with my first paycheck from 1968 ... and my driving instructor's approval for me to apply for my first license. Cazalea (pack rat)

All the horses I've met recently are worth much more than a typical van!

Good point! And as with any environment, deals are always to be had in every environment. It all depends on the product. Rare products are always rare. Commodities are the ones that fluctuate more on supply/demand.

And an accordion in the study and a guitar under the bed. I wonder if we could trade all those for a Rolex... Nicely-done on the horse trading, Jurry. Cheers, Cazalea
