PP Aquanaut 5167a and AP Royal Oak Offshore Diver...Value?

Aug 17, 2011,07:35 AM

Hi there Purists,

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167a and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver are two exemplary luxury sport watches, both with superior horological pedigree, design, quality, and finishing. Though these watches have different intended purposes with the AP being a high-end diving watch and the PP a casual luxury sport watch, they have similar features.

They both have quality rubber straps though the AP diver has a brushed tang buckle whereas the Aquanaut uses a highly polished deployant clasp. Both are stainless steel.
They both have octagonal stainless steel cases.
They both have beautifully decorated, highly-finished, reliable self-winding movements w/ gold rotors.

I'm not a watchmaker so I'm not sure how the 324 SC (Aquanaut) stacks up against the Caliber 3120 (AP Diver).

Can someone please tell me why the Aquanaut commands a significantly higher price? Is it brand recognition and value rentention? The finishing of the movement? Does the rotor contain more gold? Is it the cost of the deployant clasp and its finishing?

Don't get me wrong, I love the Patek Philippe Aquanaut. I would like one someday but for the price it commands for what it delivers is a little outrageous in my opinion. The AP Royal Oak 15300ST and Diver are very competitive watches for significantly less money when you compare it to the Aquanaut.

I know it's a moot point to argue value in the luxury sector, but it's all relative.

I hope my question is appropriate and I apologize for the poor writing!

Thanks!

Hi Ken, "value" can be in many aspects.

Intrinsic value Ego-boosting value Status-enhancing value Monetary value and etc. I believe only monetary value discussion is prohibited here. Regards Ling

I really like the Patek Aquanaut. The watch is SOOOO comfortable on the rubber strap. It is very light, which I like. Some people value "heft" in a watch, but I do not. I think the Patek is rated at 120M, which I'm sure is less than the AP. Many people lo...

are about 80% the same car. Still a Skoda is more than 20% cheaper than a corresponding Audi. Why? I think that when comparing AP with PP you are comparing apples with oranges. I personally like both watches and both of them are more or less worth the mon...
