Piece Unique: A Pocket Watch By Independent Watchmaker Christian Klings

 By: patrick_y : October 31st, 2022-04:27
Klings is a watchmaker whom is constantly out of the lime light. In his entire career, he’s only made about three dozen or so watches. Compared to Picasso who made over 30,000 artworks or Monet who made around 2500 artworks in his career, this is a tiny n...

He is one of my favorite 'unknown' watchmakers...

...but let's try to keep him a secret : )

Can you even commission a piece from Klings?

I heard from a friend that he is impossible to get a hold of.

Christian Klings

is now retired.

That's what I heard as well.

You my friend need to consider a Miki Eleta clock (before he retires)! It'll go well with your electric Bugatti sports car!

Thanks Patrick!

I don't own a world class clock yet but I think a Mika Eleta clock may be a bit too up market for me. A modest Erwin Sattler will be fine.

It's right up your ally!

We can always ask Eleta to make a smaller clock. You, like me, like simple watches as much as the complex ones. Maybe a simpler clock will be the right one for you!

Hey Patrick!

I have browed through MIki Eleta's website and this genius does not make simple small clocks. Everything is highly elaborate and intricate so I shall leave his clocks to the likes of Elon Musk and Patrick Y. Incidentally, I have been watching Bling Empire...

LOL! I haven't seen Bling Empire. I had to look it up!

Is it any good? Seems like a glamorous party-going lifestyle. I remember those days with gala dinners. Will probably start again now that the pandemic is winding down. I'll be waiting for the call from the casting agent! They might need me to bring my own...

Bling Empire is ok

 By: sham1 : November 1st, 2022-08:27
but it gets a bit boring after season one. Dubai Bling is a lot better! Have you added any more Music Machines to your collection?!

No more music machines.

I still have just the one.

Retired, how unfortunate. (nt)

Not so good for us collectors

 By: sham1 : October 31st, 2022-16:26
but I commend Christian Kings for being able to stop working and enjoying life rather than working continuously.

+1!! (nt)

Yes... Sadly we can only buy his pieces at auction now...

I should start a go-fund-me page for buying watches for a mini-museum. This Klings pocket watch would be top of the list!

Generally no. Which is why I was willing to make this post!

 By: patrick_y : October 31st, 2022-09:44
Otherwise, if I made this post and he was still willing to take commissions, I would've shot myself in both feet if I hadn't gotten my order in! I'm joking of course, I'd make this post even if it negatively affected me. And nope, I don't think I can get ...

Oops! Sorry!

Totally agree.

Agree, so incredible!

Your photos are gorgeous examples...

I wished Jaeger LeCoultre made such lavishly finished watches. Yes, I know, they do for special models like the Septieme and that special perpetual calendar. But wow. Those are gorgeously finished watches. Especially that last one. Furthermore, Le Sentier...

Yes. No cheating.

No spinning dentist drill machines that help accelerate the anglage process. Just slow filing with progressively finer files and very fine sand paper or cloth. Amazing.

You are most welcome! Thank you for reading!

Really. What an incredible piece of horology. It's almost surprising that this piece isn't in a museum. The Patek Philippe museum should acquire it and put it on their second floor. What an amazing work of art.

how old is he now?

Any apprentice?

Herr Klings is right around retirement age. He was born in 1957 or 1958.

 By: patrick_y : October 31st, 2022-09:52
Have you seen Miki Eleta's work? There are some similarities. Eleta also doesn't use any computers nor CNC machines to conceptualize nor produce his works. Eleta is around 70 years old. And in Eleta's entire career, he's only made around 40 clocks. Very s...

Absolutely amazing!

Such wonderful dedication and creativity are what makes this hobby so very interesting. Love seeing alternatives and advancements 100s of years after humans first had a way to tell the time 'accurately'.

Agreed!

 By: patrick_y : October 31st, 2022-11:06
Yes, amazing that we're still improving upon something that's 200 years old. This is truly an exquisite piece. I have a thing for things made without computers. Maybe it's because I live in Silicon Valley and all I see every day are computers, computers, ...

A metaphor for when things were done right...

Absolutely gorgeous ! Lucky will be those who own one. Kurt

Yes! Sadly, that ownership pool is very small.

 By: patrick_y : October 31st, 2022-15:28
Only 30 something pieces exist. So there are probably less than 30 owners - as I imagine a handful might own two pieces. So those are some very lucky individuals.

That's what it takes to be successful!

One's got to have true devotion! 15 years! Amazing.
