Histoire De Tourbillon.

Dec 27, 2009,14:04 PM

Here was the one watch I was skeptical about. The title of the series did not convince me that here would be a watch worth looking at, especially since the first of the series really did not start and what I would define as a starting point. The watch itself is bespoke form the modern masters of the tourbillon: Greubel Forsey. A dual tourbillon, with the 25 degree inclined escapements rotating at a speedy 36 second complete rotation, with a differential to sort out the distribution of the timing itself.

From the outside, the watch looks clunky and heavy, with the time itself hard to read off a small dial at the base of the watch face. But the surprise, at least to me, was the way the watch itself acted as a rare jewel. From the first, outward appearance, the watch is all double toubillon escapement and minimal time display. Taker a closer look at the watch, past the display, and all the movement can be seen. The power barrels, the drive train, the differential, all polished and visible.

Although the literal translation would be the story of the tourbillon, which suggests history through the name itself, the series is more a progression; the story yet to be told, and will be through the remaining four in the series. Given the quality and standard of the first in the series, I eagerly await what is to come.

Hope you all enjoyed

Andrew H

A Commitment to Avant Garde Haute Horologie – More Recent Offerings from Harry Winston.

 By: 219 : December 27th, 2009-13:54
It was not long after meeting the Harry Winston crowd at the Salon QP that I was invited back to the shop on Bond Street to photograph some of the other watches that Harry Winston has on offer. In particular the more recent watches in the Opus series, and...

Opus 8

 By: 219 : December 27th, 2009-14:00
If ever there was an ill conceived ‘Opus’ watch it is this one. I did not like it at the release, and I do not like it now. Now I have had the opportunity to look at it in detail and before doing so, I will admit that I wondered if there was s...

Opus 9

 By: 219 : December 27th, 2009-14:02
In the same vein, comes last years Opus 9. Once again, a great deal of the complication is lost the design of the case and the display of the time. In this instance, there is a stronger link to Harry Winston’s background in that time is displayed by means...

what they were thinking!

this is what comes to my mind when i see this watch, did they aim for a jeweler piece or a time piece? the watches complication is an astonishing art in itself, but the way the translated the movement to a time display....:S i would love to know why they ...

Opus 8 is awful and Opus 9 has been done by Otium for several years

 By: G99 : December 28th, 2009-03:33
ok, the 9 has a nice way of displaying time, but has diamonds, another reason for me to hate it. Otium, a small german company have been making a watch with the same method of time display for 3 or 4 years at a price that i could consider so why even cons...

It is strange

 By: aaronm : December 27th, 2009-14:24
but this watch reminds me of the Breguet La Tradition Tourbillon. Both are massive watches where the reading of the time is subordinate, both in size and positioning, to the tourbillon and related mechanisms (differential here, fusee there). It helps that...

thanks for the great post Andrew...

and it was most enjoyable indeed. i echo your views on the opus 8 and 9. the opus 8 being a 'lost the plot' headscratcher for me and the 9 just not appealing to me. aesthetically i had mentioned something about plane seat belts and luggage locks but thats...

i would say this time winston landed where they fully aimed to land at,regardless of the watchs chunkyness, it displays moderinty yet combining a hestorical movement the tourbillon in fact couple of them, the heritage is apearing through the dial, i would...

I'm gonna have to let that one sink in a little bit...

I appreciate the time you took on your post. Your thoughts on the watches, and live shots of them, give me a better grasp of their designs. The HW Opus watches have always been audacious, and perhaps that's their raison d'etre . It's good to see these pol...

I am not sure about these models.

While I like some of the earlier variations, these do nothing for me. Just glad we have choices. JerryW

its prettier, sexier, and romantic than the original. Nevertheless, i like the back side of OPUS 8, very blade runner like with the balance in the middle reminding of the vagabondage too Cheers, Ed~

I like the Histoire De Tourbillon

Like you mentioned, it can be seen as a piece of mechanical jewelry. Although not my cup of tea, I have to applaud HW for their audacious approaches to post-modern design. It is always good to have variety. Thanks Andrew, for the photos. Jon (Z3)

Andrew, on the tourbillon is the hand(s) fixed with rotating time discs??

thats what it looks like to me so i thought i'd check. that is the best of the 3, but still not up to the quality and good looks of the Greubel Forsey originals which are beautiful. thanks for taking the time to post even though you didnt care for the wat...
