Jaeger-LeCoultre

The simple things in life…

are sometimes the best.

Over time, I've become more and more a fan of simple watches.

Many brands try all sorts of ways to make a simple watch, but it is not at all easy to do well, and IMHO Jaeger LeCoultre succeeds more often than most at this kind of watchmaking.  Sure their range includes some very complex 'miracle' watches, and that's fine, but their catalogue also includes some very subtle little masterpieces as well.

My first JLC was the Master Ultrathin, 34mm. See here . I've worn this near continuously for several months now, and it's appeal has not worn off.

But I was thinking of another JLC, and eventually settled on a Reverso. The UTT 1931 seemed like a perfect option, until I actually tried one on, and found that it just didn't wear well on my wrist - too long, and the proportions just didn't come together for me.

So after a little more research and consideration, I chose the classic Reverso Grande Taille.

To me it is a very pure expression of what the Reverso is about - the blued steel hands, the polished, closed case-back, the very subtle enraving on the dial, the art-deco case finishing, the two-level sunken sub-seconds, which echoes the two zones on the main part of the dial. I love it.

For comparison, with my other simple JLC.

If I had to pick a criticism, I'm not wild about the numbering used in the sub-dial - the font doesn't quite work for me - but it's a small point. It is also a scratch and finger print magnet.

And well, the back view isn't quite as exciting as the MUT.

And it isn't quite so thin either.

Hope you like it…
