I pulled out my trusty caliper that measures to 0.1mm Here are my results:
Watches 3970 5970
Crown diam 37.6 41.3
Case Diam 36.0 39.7 at 3 different points
Case Top daim 33.0 35.2
Crystal diam 29.0 32.0
Dial diam 28.0 29.8
My only conclusions
5970 is not a precise 40.00mm
Big diff seems to be case size 36 vs 39.7 for a 3.7mm diff whereas dial diff is 28.0 vs 29.8 for a 1.8 diff. I think the 5970 wears "small" because its dial is small.
