How often do you come across a watch that you’ve never thought of before due to lack of hype, marketing or is just plain under the radar? No fancy brand name, thus low investment value for those who care and it would appear to be outside the scope for collectors. Yet you fall for it for no apparent reason than the fact that it appeals to you.
We are often affected and influenced a great deal by excessive hype/advertising/forum discussions and what the connoisseurs, for whatever reason consider to be highly collectable, rare and thus creating demand and price premiums. It’s somewhat like a herd instinct; when there is a queue for something; more likely the queue gets longer. To be fair, there are some things that are worth queuing for but for me rarely.
Well, I’ve learnt from experience not to rush into hasty decisions at the boutiques but to properly evaluate a piece with time and under no circumstances make a spontaneous buy, as it is so easy to do under the conducive environment and the persuasive sales talk. I’ve also decided to concentrate on only a few brands that make an impression on me and are synonymous with quality and reliability. However, my nature is such that I like living for the moment; spontaneity and joie de vivre is my forte and resolutions often go out the door.
My friends or fellow watch enthusiasts often chide me for going off track.
Well, I’ve done it again; call me weak but a few days ago on impulse I made the call on a watch that I saw for the first time. All I can say is, it feels great to just do it!
Up until now, I’m still delighted and consider it to be a good decision after living with it for the past few days .It has surpassed my expectations in comfort, accuracy, finish and in the looks department.
Here’s the oddball, a jumping hour Daniel Roth Ellipsocurvex Papillon. I’ve never before actually contemplated one of these as I like watches with hands but I fell under the spell of the big grin.
