We haven't heard all that much from Thomas in the last couple of years so I thought a visit was in order.
Thomas has moved his shop since the high-times before the latest financial crisis. He is enjoying the advantages of a one-man-shop in his own house – life seems to have less speed.
He has more time again for unique pieces and complicated restorations and time to be creative and to develop new things.  With the new working situation it is possible to withstand the stressful life of an independent watchmaker and enjoy as much time as possible with his family.
The only disadvantage is that there is no-one to delegate work to.

We see here the view from Thomas' workbench.

And the view on Thomas' work bench.

A Haas repeater movement that Thomas is restoring and will give a haute gamme finish.

The movements present little problem...

… rust damage on the escape wheel.

With a little luck there may be a compatible escape wheel in this collection, if not there is some demanding work to be done - making a new escapement wheel.

Thomas' work bench.

The machine shop has also been installed in the new location.  Thus with changing the location Thomas still has his impressive machining capabilities, an important key to creation and innovation in watchmaking.

An heirloom Vacheron Constantin chrono pocket watch that Thomas just finished repairing.  The commission was to bring the movement up to top level snuff, but only cleaning of the dial and hands.  No new lum on the hands or dial that would necessarily change the look of the watch.

We will be hearing more from Thomas and see that Haas movement in all its beauty as the heart of the next piece in Prescher's “Nemo” series, the Nemo Repeater.
I am looking forward to it.

for the nice account of your interesting visit . I i.agine that for a talented independant watchmaker the servicing old vintage watches can often be very rewarding and lead to new ideas... New creations. I am looking forward to T. Preschers future projects.

Don, Thanks for the update that I read out to the current Mrs MTF. "Thomas Prescher? Sounds familiar." "Don't you remember? He made the watches with two arms for time display." "Wasn't that xxxxxx xxxxx?" "No, Thomas is a better watchmaker than xxxxxx xxxxx." "A-so desu ne...." Regards, MTF

This keeps his freedom of expression to the max. Little overhead means, more time to do exactly what he pleases. Bravo! And I can see that restoring and re-inventing old masterpieces pieces gives him that much needed foot in the tradition. Nice! S
