SJX introduces the Speake-Marin Dong Son limited edition, a timepiece inspired by ancient Vietnamese culture and crafted for the brand's Vietnamese retailer. This post delves into the unique design elements, such as the laser-etched red gold dial and the use of specific hands, offering insights into Peter Speake-Marin's creative process and cultural inspirations.
Peter just sent this over. This is an 18 piece limited edition with a laser etched red gold dial, made for Peter's retailer in Vietnam. The dial motif is inspired by the bronze drums of the Dong Son culture. I like the look though I find the Breguet hands unusual for a PSM.

Press release:
Speake-Marin unveil a few more pictures of the Dong Son, a specially-commissioned, limited-edition timepiece featuring an 18k red gold dial with etched motif inspired by ancient Dong Son bronze drums, a Vietnamese cultural treasure. It features a red gold dial stunningly etched away to leave a fascinating motif inspired by the prehistoric bronze drums of the Dong Son culture in the Red River Delta of Vietnam.
The intricately detailed dial is complemented by the drum-like Speake-Marin Piccadilly case in 18k red gold, further evoking the beauty of the ancient Dong Son drums. In addition to the signature Piccadilly case, the Dong Son possesses other quintessential Speake-Marin qualities including characteristic pleated crown, signature Foundation hand, mystery winding rotor and features the new, automatic-winding Eros 1 movement with five-day power reserve.
Peter Speake-Marin says, βIt has been a pleasure to explore and showcase the ancient Dong Son culture and one of its prized artefacts through creating the Speake-Marin Dong Son timepiece.β 18 pieces of the Dong Son are now exclusively available from the Vietnamese distributor in Ho Chi Minh City.

When i first saw the piece at a gtg, the moment it was brought out and words uttered was "hey take a look at the Vietnam LE" My first thoughts was..."great, now even PSM watches are being counterfeited!", thats due to the Breguet hands used and the person happened to be in Vietnam when he bought this to show us. But then i when i saw the movement and it was the Eros-1, only then i thought ok...it really is a LE. Now i know the dial is laser etched and not hand engraved.
Reminds me of the recent DeBethune mayan piece for some reason A
It gives me an idea of PSM in wayang or batik theme.... cen@jkt This message has been edited by cen@jkt on 2012-05-25 08:31:52
Thanks for the input, the details in the dial with the small pillars and fine detail is not possible to reproduce by hand in the way I was looking to represent the Dong Son drum, only through chemical or lazer etching could I attain this kind of detail. For the hands, Breguet have excentric holes in them, these are concetric, I had designed for my early QP's to avoid cluttering the dial and I used these (called Gianfranca style) because they compliment the geometric angular features in the dial,
Love that depth on the dial! Amazing art work!
that these moko drums were found in Alor island in Indonesia? It was so prized that it's used as a ceremonial object or dowry. Nobody knows how it ends up in a remote place in Indonesia. Or maybe DHL has been around longer than we know... cen@jkt
