Baron - Mr Red shares his latest acquisition, the Rolex Submariner 14060M, highlighting its unique 'LGF' dial variant. His post delves into the subjective nature of rarity in watch collecting and explains why this particular reference, with its blend of modern technology and vintage aesthetics, stands out as a perfect daily wearer.

As a collector, I started with JLC by default. With time, I slowly became a Rolex collector. As a sports watch, I don’t think any manufacturer produces a better watch. OK, that is a purely subjective view, but it is what I believe. And I need sports watches. Watches that are robust, reliable and with proven engineering behind them.

Oh yes, I also like rarity. Rarity is one of those things that is quite nebulous. It is quite hard to truly define it. Oil paintings created by me are WAY rarer than by Picasso. Yet, in that sense, the demand side of the equation also needs to be taken into account as literally nobody cares to buy a painting by me. So rarity in a watch also requires a commensurate demand side to make it interesting. I like watches that have a rarity attached to them. It makes them different to a commodity and it also is more satisfying to find.

And this leads me to the latest addition to my collection. Like several others before me, the attraction of the Submariner 14060M has been strong. It ticks the boxes for me for a modern Rolex. It has all the advantages of modern technology yet at the same time has that vintage feel to it. It is the natural successor to the 5512/5513 Submariner but at the same time it is a totally modern watch. Known as the “last of the best”, the 14060M represents to me an almost perfect daily wearer.

I wouldn’t say that the 14060M is a common watch, but it isn’t a rare watch either. However, as with so many things with Rolex, it is the small and subtle factors that can make a watch rare. With the 14060M, this is no exception. The dial quirk that sees a long F on the 4-line text makes this watch one of the rarer Submariners when it has this dial format. For a more full description of this quirk, please see the attached link.

For now, I am starting to enjoy what I see as a perfect daily wearer - the 14060M LGF. One of the rarest Submariners for well under the list price of a modern Submariner.

About the Rolex Submariner No Date Ref. 14060M

The Rolex Submariner reference 14060M represents a transitional period for the non-date Submariner line, succeeding the 14060 and preceding the ceramic bezel 114060. This reference maintained the classic aesthetic of its predecessors while incorporating updated technical specifications, making it a desirable piece for collectors who appreciate the traditional Submariner profile without the cyclops date magnifier. It is distinguished by its two lines of text on the dial, later evolving to four lines with the addition of chronometer certification.

This reference features a 40 mm stainless steel case, housing the automatic caliber 3130. The movement provides a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. A sapphire crystal protects the black dial, and the watch is water-resistant to 300 meters. The unidirectional rotating bezel is fitted with an aluminum insert, characteristic of Rolex sports watches from this era.

For collectors, the 14060M is significant as one of the last Submariner models to feature drilled lug holes on some early examples and an aluminum bezel insert, elements that appeal to enthusiasts of earlier Rolex designs. Its production run saw minor variations, particularly in dial text, which are points of interest for detailed study among collectors. It bridges the gap between the vintage and modern eras of the Submariner.
