I had the white and black dial predecessors of 116500LN but sold them together with my other Rolex’s when I dove into brands like AP and ultimately PP. I didn’t want to buy any Rolex’s anymore but made an exception for the stainless steel Sky-Dweller blue dial for the combination of steel watch, interesting movement and complications as well as beautiful blue sunburst dial. The appeal of the Sky-Dweller is really great and the watch keeps time more accurately than any AP or PP I own (including PP 5235G which is supposed to be very accurate); the only drawbacks of this watch are the thickness of its case and its weight). This experience made me more open-minded vis-à-vis Rolex again. Thus, I asked my AD early November to get me a 116500LN and after 10 days on the wrist, I have to say that it’s a stunning watch in so many respects. The case proportions are great: 40mm diameter but wears a little bit smaller than that; thickness for an automatic chrono is perfect. The contrast of the white dial and the black sub-dials and bezel is awesome. It’s a really elegant and dressy sports watch. And guess what? The accuracy is excellent too. In a nutshell: I love it. Best, Volker

About the Rolex Rolex Daytona Ref. 116500

The Cosmograph Daytona reference 116500LN represents a significant evolution within the Daytona collection, introducing a black Cerachrom bezel to the steel model. This reference succeeded the 116520 and quickly became a highly sought-after contemporary chronograph. It maintains the classic Daytona aesthetic while incorporating modern material technology for enhanced durability and scratch resistance on the bezel.

This reference features a 40 mm Oyster case crafted from Oystersteel, paired with a fixed black Cerachrom bezel with an engraved tachymetric scale. It is powered by the in-house Rolex Caliber 4130, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement known for its robust construction and precision. The movement offers a power reserve of approximately 72 hours and is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, ensuring water resistance up to 100 meters.

Appealing to collectors interested in modern Rolex chronographs, the 116500LN is available with either a white or black dial, both offering high contrast against the black bezel. Its combination of traditional steel construction with advanced ceramic technology positions it as a key reference in the ongoing development of the Cosmograph Daytona line, bridging classic design with contemporary material science.

Your words resonate with me. Although there are one or two modern Rolex that I like, I feel that the vintage post-1970 stuff is what works for me. Having said that, this Daytona is very appealing. Wear in teh best of health, J

Not surprising, though, as this is a particularly attractive Daytona. And I agree that the dimensions are about perfect for a three register chronograph. Keep enjoying it.

I am waiting for mine 😀. I got into Rolex in 2012 with a DSSD followed by a number of vintage GMTM. And mostly recently a skydweller too. Agreed, their 40 mm models are well proportioned and sit well on the wrist. Rolex really has a way with design and functionality. Enjoy!

what are your thoughts about the black dial one? I still have not seen either of them in real life.

The black dial 116500LN has too much black and is too monochrome, IMO. I had the chance to choose between the two dial colors, and the white dial was my clear favorite from the very beginning. However, for me, it's a totally different story when looking at the Daytona steel bezel models. Here I clearly prefer the black dial ones (the silver sub-dials perfectly matching the silver bezel and contrasting very well with the black dial). Best, Volker
