Miles_151 shares a relatable experience many watch collectors encounter: the casual wrist-check and subsequent judgment from fellow enthusiasts. His story highlights the evolving perspective on luxury watch ownership, where personal enjoyment and maturity often outweigh brand snobbery. This piece delves into the nuances of how collectors perceive value and status, especially when a 'humbler' timepiece like a Tudor Chrono is in the spotlight.

I recently was onboard a flight to the Balearic Islands with 2 friends for some boys fun. Having drank the obligatory 3/5 pints in the lounge and then onboard the flight it was time for the little boys room at the front of the aircraft. As we were sat together my 2 friends and myself all decided to go together. Stood at the front of the aircraft waiting for the toilets to become vacant I noticed 3 middle aged Men sat on the front row. Looked to me like golfers. Now you will all recognise what happened next as watch enthusiasts. The 3 of them were all wearing Rolex. They had 2 submariners and a yellow gold YM. My 2 buddies had their Kermit and Explorer 2 on. I on the other hand had my Tudor Chrono on. As we stood for a few minutes I saw all 3 checking out our watches bearing in mind they were only a few feet away they couldn’t conceal their excitement at seeing fellow watch owners. I heard them talking discussing what we had on. Yes that’s a Kermit the lead golfer said then a few seconds later the other said yes and that’s an Explorer 2 then there was a pause. I heard the lead expert say no no it’s not ummmm is it? the other one said. Ummmmm ah no the lead said with disappointment In his voice it’s just a Tudor.
My black Tudor Chrono had been described as just a Tudor.
This made me smile so much and even more proud of my poor man’s Rolex.

When we got back to our seats I told my friends whom have both been with me on my journey for over 25 years of watch collecting. They both laughed and said if only they knew.
Go and tell them one said. Not a chance I said they will have a much better golfing trip as it is.

Maybe 15 years ago I may have showed them a picture of my Daytona collection but now with Maturity not a chance just an Inward smile.

I’m sure many here have been in a similar position. Just made me smile.

About the Rolex Submariner Date Ref. 16610LV

The Submariner Date reference 16610LV, often recognized by its distinctive green bezel, was introduced to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Submariner line. This particular reference stands out from the standard Submariner Date models due to its unique colorway, offering a different aesthetic while retaining the core design principles of the collection. It represents a specific period in the Submariner's evolution, bridging classic design with a celebratory touch.

This reference features a 40mm Oyster case crafted from 904L stainless steel, paired with a matching Oyster bracelet. It is equipped with the self-winding Rolex Caliber 3135, a movement known for its precision and reliability, offering a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal, and its construction ensures a water resistance rating suitable for its intended use.

For collectors, the 16610LV holds particular appeal due to its limited production run and unique bezel color, distinguishing it from other Submariner Date references. It is a notable variant within the Submariner family, offering a distinct visual identity while maintaining the robust engineering associated with the model. Its place in the lineup is marked by its anniversary significance and its departure from the traditional black bezel.

Arrogance versus true watch passion. A Classic.

You did very well not to tell them what you have in your collection. That would not have been elegant, and they would have had a heart attack. )) You are more than right to be proud of your Tudor. These guys will never understand. Best, my friend. Nicolas

True my friend.

What is even funnier is that all that trip you can imagine the banter about “my S##T Tudor “ ever opportunity they had. More smiles created by our watch obsession. M.

Fantastic narrative right from the first Ale of the trip to the end post-bathroom!

In any event, true horological enthusiasts will judge a man’s intent and passion for timepieces rather than whatever may be on the wrist at a single point in time. My favourite timepieces include Seiko and Casio as well as more luxe Swiss pieces that granted I am fortunate enough to own. My love of watches was just a strong when I received my first watch - a Timex manual wind for my 8th birthday. Kudos to you for staying classy! 🍻
