Amanico, a discerning collector known for his selective taste in modern Patek Philippe, shares a deeply personal 15-year ownership review of his Patek Philippe Ref. 5070G. His candid reflections on its perceived imperfections—the 42mm case, the 'small' Lemania-based CH 27-70 movement, and the centered subdials—reveal why this reference, despite its quirks, holds a unique and enduring charm that transcends mere technical specifications. This article explores why the 5070G continues to captivate collectors, even those not easily swayed by the brand's broader appeal.

You know I am not the biggest Patek fan here. Well there are some vintage Patek I would love to own, and much fewer moderns. In fact, less than ten modern Patek would make me dream. Among them, I am lucky to own those I wanted to get, and a bit more which make me dream or which I would gladly get one day, my absolute grail being the 5970P, or a 5078.

Among those I am lucky to own, there is the 5070G, which I could add in my collection in May 2010. It took me 6 years to get it, since the first moment I saw it in the window display of the Patek Boutique in Paris.

I wrote it many times, it is not the most beautiful chronograph I know, nor the finest, but, a bit like the World Time 5110, it is hard to beat in terms of charm and soul.

Ok, the case is big, with its 42 mm diameter, but it is not too thick with its 11, 6 mm height.

Yes, the movement, the lovely Lemania reworked by Patek, reference CH 27-70 is too small for this case, with a diameter of 27, 5 mm, but it is nicely decorated and finished, with its beveled bridges, and it offers a good power reserve of 60 hours.

Some will say that the subdials are too centered, due to the case and movement sizes, which is true, but... I find it ( the dial ) and them ( the subdials ) totally charming. The brushed decoration gives some elegance to the dial, as well as the leaf shaped hands.

The step bezel is very much my taste, the nicely integrated crown and pushers too.

The 5070 has, in my opinion, what the other and later Patek Chronographs don't have... Charm, once again. It has a strong link with its ancestor, the Ref 2512, if you pay attention to the dial, hands, case, bezel and lugs. Remarkable.

During all these 15 years, love is growing for this chronograph, more and more. Put one on your wrist, and you will see. The magic is here.

It is one of these rare watches which has the status of an Icon and a Classic.

At least for me, it is a keeper.

Happy 15th birthday to my 5070!

Best,

Nicolas

About the Patek Philippe Ref. 2512

The Patek Philippe Reference 2512 is a notable example of the brand's mid-century production, characterized by its substantial case dimensions for the era. This reference is recognized for its robust presence on the wrist, distinguishing it from many of its contemporaries which often featured more modest sizing. It represents a particular design philosophy from Patek Philippe, emphasizing a more pronounced and assertive aesthetic while maintaining the brand's commitment to horological excellence. The reference is a testament to the diverse design approaches Patek Philippe explored in the mid-20th century.

This reference typically features a manually wound movement, reflecting the common practice of the period. The case material is often yellow gold, though other precious metals may exist. Its larger diameter for the time contributes to its distinct visual impact. The crystal is generally acrylic, consistent with watches from this era, providing a clear view of the dial. The movement within would have been finished to Patek Philippe's high standards, ensuring precision and reliability.

For collectors, the Reference 2512 appeals to those seeking vintage Patek Philippe pieces with a more commanding wrist presence. Its relative rarity and distinctive proportions make it a point of interest among enthusiasts who appreciate the brand's historical output beyond its more commonly encountered models. The reference fits into the broader Patek Philippe catalog as an example of the brand's willingness to experiment with different case sizes and forms, offering a unique option for those who prefer a larger vintage watch.

Nice pics and perfect description 👍👌👌

I couldn’t have said it better 🤷‍♂️, you said it all Nico. You are a perfect Vlad 😈 you are the one who convinced me many years ago that it was 👌👌 on my wrist too in spite of its size vs my small wrist and I am so glad that I followed your advice. I’ll ad some pics of mine shortly when I’ll have access to my laptop. Happy Anniversary to your 5070 my friend 😉🎂🍾🥂

Yeaaah! Something special, it has some magic 😉

You described it quite well, it might not be the nicest chronograph from Patek, maybe the case is quite large, the two sub counters too close from the center, but still it is the coolest on the wrist 😎

Clearly. In terms of charm, it is almost unbeatable. A still under rated Classic.
