MTF's original post introduces the Chopard Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Only Watch 2015, a unique titanium and DLC chronograph created for the charity auction. This article highlights the watch's design inspirations from the Porsche 919 Hybrid race car and its significance as a collaboration for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research, endorsed by racing champion Mark Webber.
Chronograph for the Monaco Association against Muscular Dystrophy
For the 6th edition of Only Watch, the charity auction for research about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Chopard donates the Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Only Watch 2015, a unique piece with a racy style that is signed by Mark Webber, a racing champion and Chopard brand ambassador.
Past editions of the Only Watch Auctions have been held in Monaco under the aegis of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II. This new venture with Phillips Auctions Geneva has 40 watches to beat the 5M Euro garnered in 2013 with 33 watches.
As a physician, I have seen at first hand what muscular dystrophy can do; so I urge collectors everywhere to dig deep and maximise proceeds for the charity.
The steel production series Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Edition was issued to celebrate the partnership between Chopard and Porsche Motorsport for the World Endurance Championship (WEC), which witnessed the grand return of Porsche after a 16-year absence and its double victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2015 finishing 1st and 2nd Overall.
The unique piece for Only Watch symbolises the encounter between two pioneering companies at the peak of their respective fields along with the support of a great champion for a good cause.
Mark Webber explains his commitment: “I didn’t hesitate when Chopard suggested I participate alongside the company for Only Watch 2015. We have created a unique watch with materials identical to those of the automobile: titanium and carbon. I really hope that it will bring a concrete support for this association and that its future owner will be as happy as I am to help this cause. I invite all passionate fans of watchmaking and racing to fuel the bidding.”
You will be bidding for a stunning and unique chronograph for Only Watch:
The new Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Edition Only Watch 2015 is the only one encased in titanium and DLC (diamond-like carbon).
The 45 mm-diameter case contains a chronograph equipped with a flyback function. It is powered by a mechanical Chopard movement: the 03.05-M calibre chronometer-certified by the C.O.S.C.
Inspired by the Porsche 919 Hybrid race car, the stripes on the dial recall the rear diffuser. Likewise, the “919” in the red rectangle within the 9 o’clock counter echoes the Porsche models competing in the World Endurance Championship.
Water-resistant to 100 metres, this watch is fitted with a rubber strap reminiscent of the slick tyre-tread on track. As aesthetically fascinating as it is technically accomplished, this precious timepiece has a 60-hour power reserve and is signed by Mark Webber.
The in-house Chopard approach to watchmaking
Chopard is a family-owned company imbued with a strong sense of independence. The various stages involved in making Superfast watches are conducted in-house. Movement development, product design, machining of cases, movement parts, decoration, surface treatment, polishing, assembly, adjustment and quality control: Chopard fully masters this entire range of watch manufacturing operations and applies them to the Superfast collection.
Certified by the COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres), the Chopard calibre 03.05-M has been completely developed, designed and assembled in the Fleurier Ebauches workshops that belong to the Chopard group.
