Peter, known as pfang56 on WatchProSite, offers a compelling six-month review of his Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Split-Second Chronograph GMT. His insights provide a valuable long-term perspective on the wearability, advanced complications, and unique design language of this avant-garde timepiece. This article delves into why this particular reference has resonated so deeply with a seasoned collector, even diverting his interest from other high-horology brands.
Hi all,
Just a 6 month update - it's been a blast wearing this Split Second Concept for nearly a half year now - and I have really enjoyed the incredibly avant garde design, the wearability, the Split and GMT complications, and the removable strap/buckle system. Previous 44mm models were sadly too intimidating for my wrist, and I wasn't thrilled about the difficulty changing straps. This Split-Second has definitively scratched the itch of cheating to RM (I regret even thinking about it!) and I hope they use the 43mm platform for more pieces beyond the Marvel editions. Love how the entire watch contours and curves on the wrist and makes it a symbiotic and almost cybernetic extension of the body...
Anyway, enjoy the rest of your Sunday all!
Peter

Key Points from the Discussion
- The author initially considered a Richard Mille, specifically an RM004v2, due to its 'racing machine' aesthetic and the knowledge that some RM models utilize AP-derived movements, but ultimately found the AP Concept Split-Second Chronograph GMT to be a more sophisticated and pragmatic choice.
- The author highlights the versatility of the watch, noting its ability to transform with different straps and its functionality as a travel watch due to its GMT and split-second complications, which he describes as 'pragmatic'.
- A key appeal of the Audemars Piguet Concept Split-Second Chronograph GMT is its 'exotic nature' and ability to offer a distinct change of pace compared to more traditional or elegant timepieces, providing valuable variety within a collection.
- The author expresses a desire for Audemars Piguet to expand the use of the 43mm platform, currently seen in some Marvel editions, for future models, as it offers a more wearable profile compared to previous 44mm Concept watches.
- A fellow collector notes that while AP's high-complication Concept pieces are highly desirable, their typically larger size can be a barrier for those with smaller wrists, hoping for future iterations in more compact packages.
- The author emphasizes that the Audemars Piguet Concept Split-Second Chronograph GMT features an in-house APRP movement, distinguishing it from some other high-end watches that may use outsourced or less extensively finished Vaucher-based movements.
