Chopard

Should be a spectacular timepiece...

I've just finished reading Revolution in Time (Landes, 2000), which discusses Berthoud's contributions to chronometry, as well as his family's legacy. According to this work, Ferdinand Berthoud was a superb and tireless craftsman who did not necessarily understand the first principles of the masterful chronometers he was designing. That's no fatal slight, as superior craftsmanship was key to achieving good results at the time, but his legacy reflects the lack of respect that some his most accomplished peers had for him and his approach to R&D.

For the Tribute to Berthoud, I anticipate an evolutionary (rather than revolutionary) technical solution married with craftsmanship that exceeds what is found in the LUC line. That will be no small feat.

In any case, it will be interesting to see how Chopard paints his legacy in contrast to the existing historical research.
