Breguet have very generously offered me a copy of the Habsburg (pre-Antiquorum) "Art of Breguet" auction catalogue to give away as a contest prize here. Our collective thanks go to them for this very kind gesture, with my own special thanks to the wonderful person behind this - she knows who she is! ![]()
This auction, which took place in Geneva on 14 April 1991, offered 204 great Breguet watches, spanning pretty much the whole spectrum of ALB's production, and including such wonders as three-wheel clocks, symphatiques, etc. I wish I had already been interested in vintage Breguets back then, as the prices some of the pieces sold for seem like a joke by today's standards.
The auction catalogue has quickly become a must-have reference book in any Breguet lover's library, and is becoming increasingly hard to find these days - you may occasionally see one crop up here and there, but this is very often at ridiculously-high prices! Each watch is illustrated with the very high-quality pictures for which Antiquorum catalogues are known, and a brief history of the watch and the owner is often given. In many instances, you will also find close-up photos and diagrams of the watches being sold. For the watches it covers, it is as close as having access to Breguet's archives as you can get without going into the basement of the Breguet boutique on Place Vendome in Paris (that's where the archives are).
So here is your chance to add this wonderful book to your reference library:
Please tell us, preferrably with a picture, which is your favourite vintage Breguet, and why (let's not to all pick the Marie-Antoinette, ok?)...
This contest will run for two weeks, to give everyone a chance to post a meaningful answer, hopefully well researched and with pictures, so on Saturday 4 December I will close the contest and pick a winner through random drawing. For once, I think that forum moderators and admin staff here on ThePuristS should also be given a chance to participate, if they wish: I know that many of them hate me for excluding them from the Roth contest!
I have the book here in Paris, and it will be dispatched by post. Any possible custom duties etc. which may be levied by the winner's country authorities are his/her own responsibility (don't see why there would be any, though).
I look forward to reading your entries... good luck! ![]()
P.S. Pictures of the book will follow as soon as I have an opportunity to take some.
