What's the opinion on the vintage bronze-cased Fifty Fathoms

for sale over on Hodink's store? If a beat-up, rusty Milspec-1 FF can go for over $61K on eBay is the $65K selling price of this clean model a "bargain"? Is the story about the bronze case true? Only 9 ever made? Meant to be made for military forces as it...

Cool..

But not my cup of tea; vintage has lots of intrinsic 'value' that sometimes far surpasses my expectations.. Great looking watch though! For me a black bay bronze seems more suitable

Agree. Vintage is gorgeus but prepare yourself with thesurprise, the patience and the money for everything that comes with age.

I can think of many other things to spend that money on.

A vintage watch is not one of them, I don't care how rare or what the story is.

Hodinkee are pretty keen on fact checking

However I think there are people that would disagree. They do appear to take claims about what they sell very seriously. I'd bet that this was correct, at least as close to correct as reasonably possible. I don't think they'd mislead anyone in their shop ...

Cool but...

I think that 65K for this watch is quite a lot, although I briefly just read its story in the shop. Otherwise I don't think that Hodinkee freaks its customers, especially at those levels. Anyway I would not buy it for such a huge amount of money. Best

Well the recent article on "Vladimir Putin's" Patek puts that into doubt.

Quite a hilarious article with no fact checking at all to put it mildly.

Would be interested in hearing Nico's take on this one.

Pretty amazing condition if all original. This is directed at a niche collector, I'm sure, and not the general watch enthusiast. John

I would say, is a fraken one.

Hands set looks like from the lower diameter FF. Dial, i think, should be a milspec one... No way, IMO

Not good, not good at all... For one good reason...

Look at what is written on the back: Blancpain... MILSPEC. So... It should come with a Milspec dial, like this one: Inside, the movement is the AS 1700. 1361 only for the US NAVY dials. The hands are not good, either. It is not the first time I see a Bron...

You have so easily demonstrated the minefield that collecting vintage FF´s is, Nico.

Incredible tid bits of information. As for that article you are working on, knowing your passion and love for the FF, Nico, it is sure to be really special! Can´t wait to read it! Abrazo, Alex

Great precision my friend!

BTW, the watch still hasn't sold. I think vintage BP collectors like yourself have noted these issues.

Crazy.....
