Despite having drunk deeply the Gallic Kool-Aid, and having owned more than a dozen Citroens, I could not bring myself to buy an SM.
My day job was author, editor and manager of one of the largest automotive publishers in the English-speaking world.
How could I go against everything I worked for?
We were trying to make automotive service accessible and profitable for independent shops.
Accepting an SM for maintenance or repairs? Nuts! This is an "engine out" procedure in progress...
To buy a car that celebrated complexity, sophistication and speed?

I think it was about this time that I concentrated on 2CVs, gave up my hydraulic Citroens, and began to collect wristwatches instead of automobiles... (down another rabbit hole)

I am obliged to agree absolutely and totally with you.
The SM was well ahead of its time and with a Maserati V6 engine to top it up. French engineering at its best. Then....politics replaced enthusiasm.
The engine was underdeveloped unfortunately 🤷🏻♂️
And the dealerships overwhelmed with the complexity of the car and not appropriately trained 🤷🏻♂️

Even the name of this car is so sexy.
One of the most distinctive designs of neo vintage cars. I don't think there is a classic car enthusiast that won't recognize these lines from a distance.
