When an F! driver is given lets say a 5 second penalty for an infraction does he pay the penalty by sitting for the designated seconds during a pit stop or is the time added to the total lap time of the race?

He has the choice

I think if there is a pit stop after the penalty they have no choice to serve the penalty during the pit stop. If there are not pit stop planned, I think it is added to the final time.
