Just performed a Google search . . .

. . . and found a Hot Rod article on the Cammer.  Apparently, Ford wasn't able to use the SOHC for NASCAR precisely because it wasn't available in a production car.  So they turned their investment towards the NHRA.

Seems like the main reason it wasn't as successful as Chrysler's 426 Hemi is that the side-oiler FE block wasn't built to take the pressure dragster engines put out.  Strong enough for road or track racing, but not the drags.

I used to know all this stuff off the top of my head ;-) . . .

For years I have driven by this awesome track on my way to the mountains, but I have never attended a race. I am in a business group and we hosted a private event for our industry colleagues. People were allowed to bring their own vehicles and race them d...

. . . same as in the legendary Cobras of the same era, not to mention Le Mans championship GT40s. Probably third on the list of Detroit powerplants, after Mopar's 426 Hemi and Pontiac's 421 Super Duty. And ahead of Ford's later Boss 429, which never lived...

Thanks Art. The owner told me he has run a 9.02 1/4 @ 168mph

I'm no expert, but this is the fastest street car I have ever seen.

If he's running 9 second et's, then it has . .

. . . to be modified. These were 12 second cars back in the day with open headers and race tires; he must've gotten close to 700 hp to approach 9 seconds. Art

Highly modified. He says it puts down over 1200 HP at tires

I'll get more specifics and make a new post when available.

1200 hp at the rear wheels, not the flywheel?! . . .

 By: Dr No : October 7th, 2018-12:21
. . . geez, that's phenomenal! Hard to believe it has a blower, and for sure it doesn't have a tunnel ram intake.

At the wheels. I will get more information ASAP.

As mentioned, fastest street car I have ever seen (not that I have seen many, but this car destroyed everything else at the event).

not just the motor , but frame suspension , everything to run that quickly , must hold a fe records , as i know people that don't run close to that in pro stock , they runlow 10 sec @ 135 to 140 and they are track only cars . that ford is insane surprised...

you forgot the 427 SOHC which never really nmade it into production

 By: jerry6 : March 21st, 2019-06:28
but that 427 was a killer motor , kne someone that had one in a Shelby with 2 4bbl carburators ,, really as a killer

Hard to remember, but I think the SOHC . . .

 By: Dr No : March 21st, 2019-12:47
. . . was built for NASCAR racing. Doubtful they were ever fitted in a production car available to the public. Racers, maybe. Art

yes they were available to buy as a block with heads and such but in 1974 it ewas over 15,000.00

 By: jerry6 : March 21st, 2019-14:14
