. . . and found a Hot Rod article on the Cammer. Apparently, Ford wasn't able to use the SOHC for NASCAR precisely because it wasn't available in a production car. So they turned their investment towards the NHRA.
Seems like the main reason it wasn't as successful as Chrysler's 426 Hemi is that the side-oiler FE block wasn't built to take the pressure dragster engines put out. Strong enough for road or track racing, but not the drags.
I used to know all this stuff off the top of my head ;-) . . .

not just the motor , but frame suspension , everything to run that quickly , must hold a fe records , as i know people that don't run close to that in pro stock , they runlow 10 sec @ 135 to 140 and they are track only cars . that ford is insane surprised...
