Offshore Safari: Your counsel requested on 26470ST.OO.A801CR.01

Hi Team,

Taken me years to warm up to this style.  Considering one of these:

Why is the ROO considered the benchmark in this segment?  Upsides for me 42mm, display back, Downsides would be small movement, modular chrono. Is it really that rugged and sporty?  Anyone swim with one?

Comments welcome.

For similar price I could entertain:

IWC QP chrono:

Or the controversial TAG Tourbillon

Thanks

Velociphile

A friend of mine own the Safari but it’s the former model with no display back. He’s really happy with it and i like it a lot too (like the new version)

He never swims with his watches so I have no idea about this specific question. Regarding the back, I would have preferred a solid one instead of a display back. The movement seems lost in the case and, aesthetically speaking, that makes no sense for me (...

I have swam with Offshores before

And never had an issue. I really like the Safari references, new and old. There is just something special about a 42mm Royal Oak Offshore. The perfect "nugget" type watch for many wrists.

So many contenders at that range...

The previous Safari has been high on my "wish list" for several years. I personally like it more than the current model. While I'm the biggest fan of the new TAG Carreras (including the 02T), I personally can't see choosing the 02T or IWC over a Safari. A...

IWC vs AP

 By: DSF : January 24th, 2018-06:53
I have the IWC and a similar version of the AP(Trulli, which is also in 42mm with the display case back). However, I haven’t had any experience with the TAG, so it will be unfair for me to comment on the Tag. From here on, I will only compare the user exp...

Now that is a love letter. :) [nt]

Solid back (original early ROOS) used to have

A soft iron antimagnetic inner back. If recently checked, swimming with the Offshore is not a problem but as JToddH notes, not with the hornback strap.

I love my watches

WRT Swimming...

Seems like you would want to avoid swimming with the Hornback Croc strap, regardless. Sure, the croc wore it for years in water, but he died. My point is that I would assume exposing it to chlorine or salt water would affect the condition of the strap. Gr...

Thank you for this in-depth user comparison

I hope it helps Velociphile to decide. Do let us know which one you choose in the end. David

Thanks everyone, so far and.... the 3120 base?

By: Velociphile - No longer in the building : January 24th, 2018-22:56
it's all very helpful. Of course, somewhat biased posting on the AP forum. Are the 3120 base movements proving to be reliable and durable now after 15 years? Velociphile

I had the Safari pictured and traded for an IWC Portuguese Perpetual Calendar

I really liked and still like the Safari. The newer model with ceramic push buttons, crown and display back were big improvements in my humble opinion. The beige dial is also was great which added to the classic feel of the watch. The size states 42mm but...
