Flipping the hour and seconds counters, changing the date marker, the logo, and the case back - all seem to modernize this piece.
But there's still something aesthetically pleasing about the simplicity and boldness of the original one - after seeing it on the wrist of Flavio Briatore made me swoon and acquire one many many years ago.
Thanks for sharing! I'm with MichaelC, slight edge to the original one.

But honestly, I prefer the older model(s) in this case. No knock on the new version, and I am very glad to see this one back in the AP catalog. Thanks for posting these photos.
