If you're surprising him, then see how big his other watches are. There might be a way of asking him this question indirectly, If he has sport Rolexes. For example, "I see Rolex makes this big dive watch called a Deep-Sea Sea-Dweller that replaced the smaller & thinner Sea-Dweller model a few years ago. What do you think of the difference between the old and new models?" Of course, if it's not a surprise, then I assume you'd just ask him.
