True black polishing
is done with diamond paste on a plate of metal (zinc I think). The part is held in a vice and polished on the plate by hand in a circular-ish motion until the surface is perfectly smooth, and thus black at certain angles. It also can be done mechanically.

I knew from a member of a Brazilian watch community, who visited GO at the beginning of June, that the balance cocks engravings are being commissioned to a professional in Dresden since the manufacture's engraver left around eight months ago.
This further reinforces my admiration for ALS.
Few manufacturers are able to impress with such magnification of movement parts. Seeing is believing!
