So, the jewellery background was the reason for the name...

 

... as silver was / is also used for jewellery.

I know the next point is a bit far leading and confusing as the understanding has something to do with German language and terminology only:

In German language "Pfeffer-Kuchen" for Christmas bakery is common, although it has no "Pfeffer"="pepper" in it.

Pepper was simply an overall term for spice in the past.

Same could mean "Glas"=jewellery ?

But: Huette is clearly a term, even nowadays used in German language, for an industrial plant as mentioned.
