Another care free saturday with a worry free seiko..

Swapped out the turtle for an SKX. Really easy to wear seiko dive watches for weeks on end. 42.5mm on a 6.75in wrist. It wears small but wears a bit high at 13.25mm in height. All in all, a comfortable piece with either a jubilee or rubber strap. What I like about the SKX007 and 009 is that they pack a lot of horological punch for the price aka a beater with history. A lot of people mention the 6105, 6217 whenever they review the SKX with a "tracing its roots" flavor like it needs halo validation. It really doesn't. The real darth to this luke is the 7002. When it bowed out in '96, it was replaced by the SKX series. This watch was supposedly discontinued a couple of years ago although one would have hardly ever noticed as there's a lot of it swimming about. A year later, give or take, the new line of Seiko 5's came out which one could easily mistake for an SKX which would be like comparing the Panerai base logo 000 to the 1000. All the latter got was the former's pretty face. So for all intents and purposes, the SKX in all its affordable yet reliable glory is most probably dead.. I say most probably because, again, with Seiko, much like its "accuracy", one can never really tell.

And this is probably where the real magic of the SKX lies. Its weakness is actually its strength. A lot of folks hate the fact that it can't get close to chronometer specs. But for a worry free watch to be worry free, it means giving up on obsessing over things like accuracy. If one is continually looking at the watch in terms of timing performance, it can be a source of mild anxiety. You buy this watch so that you can worry about other things, like making sure you still have enough air on them tanks, again, give or take a few gulps of air as it is, after all, ISO rated. While it won't get close to /- 2 seconds, you can be damn sure that it will give you a consistent -20/ 40 :p

There are beaters and there is the SKX.

As I was researching about this watch (yes, it takes me the same time to research a 200 USD watch as it does a 10K USD one not including that Omega Aqua Terra that I bought because I liked the alligator strap that went with it back in 2003) a comment from some forum sealed the deal for me, pushing me over the edge to decide that I can part a couple of bucks for the SKX.

It said, "It is the watch that you overthrow governments with" smile

Have a good saturday folks.

Rock solid, works on rubber, NATO, or bracelet, and often runs more accurately than the specs say... mine run /- 10-12 sec, which is fine with me. And easy to modify as well - got mine modded to kanji wheel, AR crystal, and some patina for a vintage vibe....
