An underrated watch

After the revolutionary - and extensively produced - AM2, the 3 found itself somewhat isolated from broader base of JLC collectors by price and rarity. But it's quite an appealing watch with a surprising number of subtle refinements.

There's the platinum-iridium winding mass from the Lab 1, it's the first round JLC to be crafted from ceramic, the caliber 988 makes an intelligent change to the original Master Tourbillon's 15th-16th date-jump by splitting the date-jump over the tourbillon between the 1st and 31st of the month. Then there are the impressive split bridges on the open dial and caseback, the sapphire discs of the AM/PM display for the second time zone, and dial detail that rivals the AM2. While the original cal 978 tourbillon was accomplished enough and reasonably appealing in the original Master Tourbillon, this version is far more engaging in style and detail.

If there is one quirk I never understood, it is the massive tourbillon bridge structure that makes the signature complication somewhat difficult to view clearly. Nevertheless, it does prevent the watch from assuming a conventional "exhibitionist" tourbillon character like those hole-in-dial models that invite attention from across the room; the bridge means that this doesn't read as a tourbillon at first glance.

The handsome interplay of platinum, ceramic, and red accents makes your version the more impressive of the two impressive AM3s. I would say that the innovative streak of the Amvox series ended after this model, but it was a high-water mark to remember.
Best,
Tim

Team, Not a common Amvox and I love the symmetric design and the exquisite bridge that hold the tourbillon. Only Jaeger-LeCoultre could dare to put a tourbillon on a watch that’s supposed to be a “sports watch”. Before I took the following pictures, I not...

Brilliant.

I like the Amvox III a lot. It is not that evident to associate a tourbillon and a sports watch.

Jaeger Lecoultre did it in a brillant way, with the Extreme Lab One and the Amvox III. In my opinion, there were three excellent Amvoxes: The I, II / 7, and this III. Best, Nicolas
