Cartoon Watches: A cure for the doldrums

Aug 13, 2022,16:55 PM

The past 3 years have been tumultuous for many (myself included). I bet, many of us are secretly wishing the pandemic did not happen, and perhaps life would go on as normal, allowing us to save up for the things we love.

Some men like Golf, some others like stereo systems, others like travelling, and I believe all of us love buying watches. There’s something about buying watches - brings a rush of endorphins, the chase, the thrill of a new toy. But when the economy is not good, this hobby suffers.

So, back during the Great Depression, people were broke, and they wanted to cheer themselves up. Many turned to the penny arcade, others bought Ingersoll Mickey Mouse Watches.

Cartoon watches have a positive effect on the psyche of people. They cheer people up, reminding them of values shown in the characters. Values such as perseverance, courage, tenacity, and more. Super Mario rescues the Princess, Mickey rescues Minnie, Popeye rescues Olive Oyl, Mighty Mouse saves the day…the list goes on.

So I have compiled a montage of cartoon watches (credits given) which are guaranteed to make people smile.

What are your favourite cartoon characters? Do you know of other cartoon watches?

A remake of the Mickey Watch by Bulgari
Don’t like the price…especially in these doldrums. And the enamel art is tiny, not as intricate as the Fantasy Pilot/Sailor/Racer as previously done before the take-over.

I went for the last Mickey Mouse Swatch before the pandemic Fun watch - be cool if they did a Denis the Menace or Minnie the Minx one, but I'm guessing that choice might be a bit more parochial Cheers JML ...

My favorite is the Gerald Genta Remake of Mickey. That's wonderful.

The dial has at least five colors that need to be silicone egg stamped. Any shift or missprint and it'll be ruined. Five colors; black, white, Mickey's face, Mickey's tongue, red pants, and yellow shoes. The black outline is probably done last. Lots of cr...

The enamel was thick and lush, especially at the checkerboard. At one time there were also the Golfing Mickey, and hexagonal pieces with Minnie and Donald Duck. So cool.

Interesting collection. Unfortunately..

It's a heart warming piece with great history to boot, and a reminder of the importance of not taking ourselves too seriously...
