Who needs a 300M dive watch at home? Why wear a steel bracelet if you're spending so much time in a climate controlled indoor environment? Why not wear a 48mm big boy now that you don't have a cuff to clear? Does the social status of a Rolex mean anything when it's just you on your couch?
Even before covid we saw independents gaining steam and I think the latest FPJ craziness could be partly a covid bump away from steel sports watches and a move towards casual complications. The steel sports watch is like the SUV of the watch world and if we're not doing those SUV kinda things anymore, it leaves room for the fun sedans and sports cars to come back. Wearing a big iced tourby to a meeting was like driving a Lamborghini to meet a client, okay maybe in some industries but not your average office/job site. Now that we're all working from home why not rock the gold tourby, pants optional.
