Survey of the Patrimony Contemporaine Retrograding Day and Date

Oct 31, 2010,18:35 PM

In my continuing tour of Vacheron Constantin's Patrimony Contemporaine line, I'd like to look at the Retrograding Day and Date, reference 86020. This is the largest of the Contemporaine models, with a diameter of 42.5 mm, and when it first came out in 2007 I thought it was way too large for a dress watch! Like many collectors, however, this size is something I have gotten used to and appreciate and wouldn't want in any other way!

Vacheron Constantin has employed the retrograding date display in the past. In The World of Vacheron Constantin we see a photo of a special watch from 1936 which combines the retrograding date with day (as well as with minute repeater).

Collectors had to wait until 2000 to see the retrograding date show up again in a wristwatch, when it appeared in the reference 47245, the "31-Day Retrograding Calendar Watch. The case was 37 mm in diameter, and the lugs alluded to a design from the 1950's. It was available in rose or white gold with a silver dial, or in platinum with a black dial. The base movement was a JLC 889 to which Vacheron Constantin created the calendar complications.

In 2002, for the 247th anniversary of the brand, Vacheron Constantin created a limited edition watch (247 pieces) in platinum that had an open dial, showcasing the retrograding mechanism as well as special finishing on the mainplate.

The first couple of years of catalog production of the Retrograding Day and Date's existence saw this watch offered only in rose gold and the silver dial. To date there is not a "boutique edition" in rose gold with the black dial, though there is no doubt in my mind that it would be both attractive and successful.

There were a couple of limited edition models, however. 35 pieces in platinum with a ruthenium colored face was made for Singapore retailer Cortina to celebrate its 35th anniversary.

In 2008, Vacheron Constantin released a limited edition of the 86020 as part of the Excellence Platine collection. This photo does not do justice to how beautiful this watch is. The blued steel pointer hand are stunning against the ghostly grey sandblasted finish of the platinum dial.

Finally, at SIHH 2010, Vacheron Constantin brought out a white gold version with a silver dial to complement the rose gold timepiece:

The Patrimony Contemporaine Retrograding Day and Date uses Vacheron Constantin's in-house automatic caliber 2460 R31 R7, which has earned the Geneva Hallmark. The exquisite finishing seen through the case back:

is matched by the unseen finishing of the retrograding calendar mechanism under the dial:

We can only hope that there will be an open dial limited edition to complement the sought after 47247!

Another VC that I love

In fact, this is probably the first VC watch that I fell for a few years ago. And I had the chance to look at one a coule of weeks ago. I was struck by its beauty, both the outside and the inside. The movement is really gorgeous. I love that rotor and it ...

Thank you, respo

I will be interested to see if VC explores any further complications in the Patrimony Contemporaine line. The challenge will be to maintain the elegance of the dial while adding more information (say, in a perpetual calendar). A simple minute repeater, of...

currently highest on my VC wish list! [nt]

I'll believe it when I see it on your wrist!

I can see you getting distracted by whatever might pop up at SIHH in a couple of months! ;-) Bill

I saw the Platinum one in flesh! It is stunning.

The EP Retrograding Day and Date

had a fearsomely high price tag, especially when compared with the standard production models, but the impact of it in person is really hard to overstate. Bill

I really like this watch...

however, the "Thu" bugs me for some reason. I'd either like to see a full "Thursday" (I know there is not much room there), or all other days abbreviated to match the "Thu". Thank you for the post. --CJ

I know what you mean, CJ...

When this watch first came out I felt like it could have been better (and more complicated) if the day pointer also came from the center axis. Then VC could have executed the days in three letter abbreviations in the same layout as the date arc, but on th...

A difficult complication to comprehend...

Thanks for the great write-up Bill. The vintage piece was something I hadn't seen before. I find the retrograde indicators to be a difficult display to get right, and some presentations achieve more success than others. For showing hours and minutes, I wo...

Hi Dean....

One aspect of the retrograding calendar display that is nice is that the arc for the date is longer than a circular pointer display would be, enhancing legibility. I understand what you mean by the challenge in reading the time when the hours and minutes ...

Grail Piece

Agreed Bill, the Mercator's design brilliance elevate it to a grail watch.

Hi Bill, you know I'm biased toward it's little brother/predecessor...

It doesn't seem to be appreciated by collectors, but I find the 31-Day Retrograde's dial to be much more attractive and easier to read (particularly the days of the week since it is circular vs. a 2nd retrograde hand). It obviously doesn't have the in-hou...

I really enjoyed my time with that watch...

when I owned it. I've always been a fan of watches that indicate both the day and date. In the mid-2000's, there were no finer day and date watches than the 47245 and the Jubile 1755. Bill

Remember when you, Alex and I were hunting

I got and was happy with the rose gold piece shown in the post above. No regrets, because I soon turned my attention to that skeleton QP! Bill

I spent my teenage years taking care of boats. I loved the work, and if it was a slow day I just went fishing off the docks! Bill
