This was done in jest, a single piece edition as satire, that got them a ton of press and many collectors appreciated a brand that shows it doesn't take itself too seriously. And by not selling it they only added to the story without being sued by other brands
On par to New Coke? Hardly. More on par to Coke Zero if anything

As for "warn against certain practices of others" - what may these be? The choice of the word *warn* is intriguing. If he had written: "draw attention to certain practices of others", I might have a clue, while still remaining stuck with *certain practice...
