A very interesting thread that I'd like to contribute to...

... I am not an owner of a Montblanc Villeret timepiece, so no personal emotion attached, but I think this example warrants some general thoughts.
I have read that one should have some understanding for the economic needs of a watch manufacturer or even a conglomerate like Richmont, LVMH or Swatch Group. My answer to this is: no, definately not! As a collector I buy a promise (e.g. reliable limited editions), exclusivity, heritage, tradition and I expect the manufacturer to stand true to those.
I want the manufacturer to understand my needs, not the other way round.
Picking the exclusive dial of a masterpiece watch for a bargain product is nothing but insensible to one's sophisticated customers. If any of the brands I love for their fine timepieces did this, I would turn my back to them. Again, this is only for brands that call themselves part of Haute Horlogerie.
To me this is an example how big conglomerates can damage individual brands for shareholder appreciation. What's next? A smartwatchthing that displays dials of all brands under the same roof? Unthinkable? I'm afraid not if the holding company is desperate enough,,,
Again, please do not understand my comments as a direct criticism to Montblanc Villeret. It is simply a good illustration of what many other manufacturers plan these days, and a reflection of my hope that they quickly adopt their plans to the reaction of their loyal customers, if they want them to stay loyal going forward.
Cheers
Henrik
