Got my new Blancpain for 2 days! Some pictures and thoughts

Feb 08, 2018,15:13 PM

The gift to myself for getting the PhD:

I absolutely LOVE the matte finish on the case! I gave a lecture early today with short sleeves and I feel very comfortable wearing it. It attracts no unnecessary attention. (If I got the Breguet marine, I probably would take it off before the class.) However the depth and sophistication of the dial and how the hands play with the light are amazing and I can easily get lost in the dial. Unfortunately the pictures can not do it justice.

I also like the alarm function a lot. I use it to set my coffee break time which causes me drank more coffee than I should these days. Another feature that I found very handy is the time-zone jumping hour hand. (I am not sure if it is its proper name.) I knew this feature before I bought it, but what I did not know is that it can change the date both forward and backward, which I believe is quite rare even for a GMT watch.

Also the finishing of the movement and the dark brown leather strap make the watch almost perfect to me aesthetically. However, I also find several drawbacks of this watch.

Firstly, the case, initially I thought there is a crack on the side of the it (over the letters ''PA'')

However, I found some other pictures of this model online show the same crack looking on it. For example the picture from Ashford, which means it is not a special case on my watch. Am I too picky about this?

I also found the alarm is not as accurate as I expected. I've used the alarm for 10+ times and it will always be triggered 2-4 minutes later than the time I set. Further, the alarm power reserve won't go to 0. It has about 5% remaining after the alarm runs out. That may be my own watch's issue, since I saw couple videos reviewing leman reveil and non of them has these two problems.

To conclude, I am still in the honeymoon with my Blancpain. Its versatility is my favorite point and I don't think I will take it off my wrist in the near future. However, although those defects I mentioned above do not bother me too much in day to day use, but as a luxury product, Blancpain could have done it better.

Cheers!
Wei

Twistarlight, Even when the honeymoon is passed eventually, this watch will always be a reminder of one moment in your life. Thanks for sharing and congratulations. Whatever else you do, the Doctor of Philosophy is yours forever. Regards, MTF

Not a crack in the case; it's where the watchmaker inserts a tool if there is a need to remove the bezel

That small opening is functional but not usually very noticeable. No worries! Cazalea

I'm glad to know that. Thanks! [nt]

Fabulous watch, but...

But what a cliffhanger to leave us on in the first photo. “The defining property of the canonical lattices implies that...? Well what does it IMPLY? 😃

Sorry...

I am still trying my best to understand that part...

Very nice catch and as you say, very under the radar and even the date is nicely “hidden” and doesn’t stick out on the dial.

Wow, my most sincere congratulations Twistarlight..

on what seems a PhD in algebraic geometry (Hodge theory perhaps? As you certainly know, lots of interesting work is currently being done there!). It's really rare --- but equally great --- to find mathematicians who love (and love to wear) quality watches...

Using Hodge theory to solve algebraic geometry problems is my main research interest!

It is amazing that you can tell that just from those couple lines!

Huge congrats on the PhD. It is a milestone not many achieve.

And congrats on the beautiful 'award' you got yourself. Wear it in great health.

Huge congrats and enjoy, both your great achievement and the beautiful GMT Reveil 😉

The oberservations with the alarm may very well be an adjustment topic. I would ask Blancpain about that. If it is a brand new watch you can let them take care of it under warranty once the honeymoon fades 😎 The gap has already been correctly explained, a...

Thanks!

Yes, I am planning to send it to Blancpain for the adjustment at the end of the warranty. I just cannot justify leaving it for couple months merely for those minor issues right now.

First, a sincere congratulations on this momentous accomplishment!

...and I commend you on your choice of watches to mark this event. I hope you are able to see past the (valid) concerns you raised, and enjoy your Blancpain to the fullest. While I can’t speak for the “crack” without seeing it up close, I think the variat...

Congratulations all around! [nt]

While I don't dare to comment on the first achievement, it's easy to comment on your watch, it's fabulous technically, aesthetically, and regarding its execution. - Does anybody remember which year Leman Alarm GMT was introduced? Can be 15 years or so... ...

Congrats Wei!

I haven't put it down for a single day since I got it and I am so excited to travel with it to Germany later this month. It will be my first time in Europe! Cheers! Wei
