RIP Dan Gurney

Sadly the motorsport legend Dan Gurney passed away yesterday at the age of 86.

His myriad claims to fame are difficult to summarise succinctly but let me try with the most famous moments.

Four times F1 race winner and 18 times podium finisher made him one of the most successful F1 drivers from the USA. Plus he’s been the only one to win in a car he constructed himself.

Inventor of the famous Gurney Flap, increasing downforce of wings at minimal aerodynamic penalty.

1967 LeMans winner (Ford) and inventor of the champagne shower at motorsport events wink

Partner in crime with Brock Yates for the Cannonball run, breaking the coast to coast record in a Ferrari 365 Daytona. Including a full speed stint over snow covered Rockies on summer tires... and subsequently involved in the making of the movie, too!

There’s much more to add. Giants like him will be missed...

. . . of young Dr No, eclipsed only by Mark Donohue. I may have been at Gurney's last race, the inaugural California 500 at Ontario Motor Speedway, in the fall of 1970. Took a picture of him on the 99th lap just as he hit the wall in the third turn, but t...

Thanks for sharing the memories, Art!

Certainly a very interesting character. I remember him featuring in Brock Yates’ book on Cannonball and the admiration BY showed for him A bit before my time to have seen him racing myself, unfortunately...

Oh, we could have armchair arguments for hours . . .

. . . over who was the best American driver; Mark, AJ and Bobby U would be on the short list, along with Mario and Phil. Still, it's tough to overcome Clark's quote about fearing only an oil patch and Gurney in his mirrors ;-) . . .

I was just about to add that.

Clark's father told Gurney that at Clark's funeral.

Mario also made the coolest statement about racing ever...

In January, I was truly torn up inside and deeply saddened when I heard that Dan Gurney has passed away. Growing up in the 1960's, learning about cars and racing, Gurney was a childhood hero. In 1990, while attending the United States Grand Prix in Phoeni...

That is a truly heartwarming story!

And it's great to know that both he and his family stayed down to Earth throughout. Thanks a lot for sharing this!

There's just a little surprise in the ad...

I would have imagined that Firestone, which used to be the fitment on quite some Ferrari's of the era, won as well - but one lives and learns Thanks!
