TimeOut

Rangefinder photography...

Nine months ago a new photography model arrived in the family... how time flies.

Just a month or 2 ago, I've been attracted to another form of photography... outside of the world of Digital SLR, into an old diminishing art, the art of rangefinder photography. I know a few fellow PuristS are also into rangefinders so I'd post about this here. It's a fun and new learning curve and what comes out of the camera is unbelievable. Given that my particular rangefinder camera is over 4 years old, it's amazing that it's still producing some very impressive image quality that can compete head to head with some of the current crop.

Of course here are a couple of examples of what I've managed with my favourite model. It's a real challenge to photograph a 9 month old model, as the object (the eyes) you're trying to focus on manually through a tiny focus patch is never stationary.

It's a lot more inconvenient than my Nikon DSLR. I could literally just point, half press, reframe and shoot within a second whereas with the rangefinder, each photo took a while to get the focus right. However, the challenge is rewarding.

Thanks RJW for bringing me into the rangefinder world, I'm really enjoying it and hopefully I'll have more inspiring examples to show another time! I need lots of practice.

Please feel free to share your rangefinder experience too!
