El Sueno de la Razon

El Sueno de la Razon Produce Monstruos (The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters) may be familiar to some of you. It is one of the more famous of Francisco de Goya's 80 satirical engravings of Los Caprichos.

I bring it up partly because it is a striking work of art in its own right, but mostly to bother you poor folks with some more music. Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco wrote 24 musical responses to 24 of Goya's engravings. Tedesco is one of the most important composers of the classical guitar repertoire, and these 24 musical Caprichos are some of the most important works of his. Number 18 is written after the above engraving. I think it is one of the most powerful and beautiful pieces of music ever created, for any instrument. It is a theme and variations, lasting about five minutes. Take a look at the engraving, have a listen at the link below, and enjoy smile

Works for solo guitar like this one are quite unknown relative to much of the rest of classical music, so it is very gratifying to share it with others.

Nothing more appropriate!

I play a bowed string instrument, but don't know much about the plucked repertoire. Thanks for broadening my (and the rest of the forum's) experience.

Fantastic post! I learned about this piece in my art history course!

La Maja just so happens to have inspired another piece of music hugely important to the guitar repertoire. La Maja de Goya was written by Enrique Granados, who was a huge fan of Goya's work. It was originally written for voice and piano, but the guitar ar...

It is very beautiful but I have always been more partial to the piano as an instrument, ofc I also really like the oboe!
