It is always worth reading those old booklets.

They are often surprising, funny, and interesting.

Here is an example of a warranty paper from the end of the 50ies.



( On the left, just above the watch ).

- Surprising:

" Oil change every 7 000 Miles:

The rim of a balance wheel travels 7 000 miles in 18 months.

That is time for an oil change. "

Which is surprising is that we never have in mind what important work does the movement of our watch.

Comparing it with the engine of a car is an brilliant idea.

BUT, on another side, who, among us, Vintage Collectors, or owners of modern watches, think about changing the oil of the movement at the end of such a short period?

OK, the quality of the modern oil have drastically improved, but I know some guys who never serviced their watches at the end of 20 years, and the watch still works flawessly.

- Interesting:

" If your watch loses or gains a few seconds per day ( remember there are 86 400 seconds in 24 hours ), you can correct it without expert aid.

The rate of a watch varies slightly depending upon its position.

Take it off at night, and place it as follows:

1/ To gain a few seconds:

Lay the watch flat, with the dial uppermost.



2/ To lose a few seconds:

Lay the watch vertically with the winding button ( crown ) downwards:



3/ To lose rather more seconds:

Lay the watch vertically with the winding button uppermost:



- And for those who wondered if it was good to synchronize the second hand on a non hacking movement:

" Pull out the winding button...A very gentle pressure on the button, as though to turn the hands anti - clockwise, will stop the second hand. Release pressure when synchronized. "

Which Rolex doesn't say is that you can't synchronize the second hand this way if the movement is fully wound.

But what we use to do referring to our intuition is recommended on the Rolex Guarantee Booklet!

We should always read these documents!
