Not in the way you think, but at the Geneve Grand Prix, in the Sports Watch category, the RM027 was edged out by the Seiko Spacewalk Commemorative.
Richard was, as ever, as gracious as ever, but I think he was robbed. In the Sports Watch category, the RM027 - a specially designed watch for tennis star Rafael Nadal, designed to withstand the near crushing g-forces from the man's backhand, as well as other knocks on the court, loses out to a watch specifically designed for a Spacewalk...
Now I am a huge fan of Seiko (look up other articles on Seiko on PuristsPro - I even own a Seiko watch or two), and while I am also a fan of the Spacewalk watch (and would love to own one), I think that this was a poor decision. The RM027 should have won. I cannot think of a more sports orientated watch designed from scratch specifically for sport!
I spoke to a few people after the ceremony (who I hold in high regard and were not on the committee) and they were equally surprised. Quotes along the lines of "you have to have the watch on your wrist to appreciate what the RM027's accomplishment is." were typical of the type of statement made. And you do, you have to have the watch on your wrist to appreciate what a brilliant achievement the watch represents.
[Yours truly with Richard, and John Simonian (RM-USA and Westime) at the after ceremony dinner]
Great to see you RIchard and sorry you did not win. RM027 is a great accomplishment.
Sorry, but have to voice this somewhere.
