Things have changed!

I used to go to the sumo in Tokyo in the days of Wajima, Kitanoumi and the peerless Chiyonofuji.  I can’t remember a mere

Maegashira ever having a chance at a title!

Also what’s with the chairs?  As far as I remember everyone always sat on tatami mats!

at the 両国国技館 (Ryōgoku Kokugikan) in Tōkyō. On 26-May-2019 he was awarded the Prime Minister's Cup and the newly introduced US President's Cup by the current position holder. (note: all photos are of TV images). It was a great day for Asanoyama from Toyama...

Great screen grabs :)

Sincere congratulations to him on the victory! Thanks for posting here, cheers, Filip

Who let the fat white guy so close to the area?

😜 They should have built a wall to keep him out 😉

That "fat white guy" is turning out to be the greatest US President at least in my lifetime

And I grew up during Reagan's administration, I'm not white, I'm a naturalized citizen, and I live in probably what is considered the most left-wing part of the country so that is saying a lot. Don't want to get political here, but if you can dish it you ...

We don't try political here - we keep things lite 😉

But I am happy to dish it out and take it ;-)  While I didn’t agree with everything Reagan did - you could at least respect the man and understand what he stood for (Conservative family values; equal branches of government; bipartisan relations between ea...

My last comment on this.

I love how the "left" brings up "family separation at the border" when Trump stopped it, but said nothing when 0bama was doing it all throughout his terms. All the footage of kids in custody you saw the media flashing was filmed in 2014 through 2016. (It ...

Dude - let's not get into this here!

 By: Bounce781 : May 27th, 2019-03:16
Peace ✌️ Let’s keep it lite. PS please don’t label me the “left” as you don’t know me. I am (and I suspect you as well) are more nuanced than RIGHT & LEFT. Those labels don’t mean anything. But let’s stop NOW. This isn’t the place for this. I’m off to bed...

Nobody’s perfect especially when adorned with absolute power especially n ‘outsider’. A lot can be forgiven if you put country first.

Nothing accomplished so far but that vision is righteous. Hopefully this vein grows amongst all leadership. Or it’s kick the can as always

His mother had a small shop in Honolulu and we got to know her a bit... ending up with some coffee mugs etc. with an Akebono logo... The "Sumo Connection" was the name of the shop... lots of Japanese tourists, but evidently not enough to be profitable ; )...

幕内 (Makuuchi) the upper Division has a limit of 42 rikishi (wrestlers) in five ranks: (01) Yokozuna, (02) Ōzek, (03) Sekiwake, (04) Komusubi, and (05) Maegashira The days are over when only Yokozuna and Ōzek are winners... and the sport is currently in a ...

regarding photos taken off of TV images. Obviously there are no more CRTs here in Japan so there's no need to care about black banding due to refresh rates. That sumo match photo was done at 1/60 second... the photo-web-sites I have checked are recommendi...

I tried to zoom in on the original photo...

My best guess, based on the photo is a Seiko of some sort... he has been known to wear a Seiko Astron SAST005 on black strap, which seems to match the photo. A fun fact (or maybe not) is that when I moved to Japan Yasuhiro Nakasone was the Prime Minister ...

 By: mdg : May 27th, 2019-10:27
...I say that in jest because my friends who follow it tell me there are a ton of non-Japanese Sumo these days. Btw, if you get the chance, live Sumo is a must-see event. The history, ceremony, etc. is fantastic. And the rules are very simple...about as p...

Yes... a local boy won the tournament

For awhile it was Hawaiian domination, currently Mongolian born rikishi hold the top spots... there are two sides of " tradition ". It's been a few years, but I did attended a few events in Tokyo when 小錦八十吉 (Konishiki) was active, he retired in 1997. He w...

When I wrote ‘if you get the chance...’ I was referring to others. I assumed, knowing where you live and the fact that you started this post, have seen Sumo matches.
