Empty cities

Apr 08, 2020,09:25 AM

The photographer Catherine Opie was interviewed recently about photography during the pandemic. There was a time early in her career when she would have relished the empty streets we have now. (She used to rise early to photograph with as few people in her images as possible.) But now she can't bring herself to photograph the easy empty of the city because the meaning of the emptiness is completely different.

I suppose this is the magic of photography, right? You can hang a picture of an empty San Francisco street from 2018 and a nearly identical one from this week and they'll produce a totally different response due to context.

Very quiet around here… The JPN government declared a month-long state of emergency for seven prefectures even though the numbers are relatively low… 4,000 reported cases of infection and 95 reported deaths nation wide (as of Tuesday). It was a good move ...

Japan is doing relatively well.....

But that’s the time to strengthen the containment measures. Your photos are interesting and give a good feel for the atmosphere. Keep safe Casey.

It seems that there has not been extensive testing here...

so the number of infected could be much higher... the mortality figure is most likely accurate. Casey

Envy you Casey

normally that far intersection is jammed with people... it's also the way to enter a major park. But, yes I was surprised to see some locations with more people than expected. Casey

Stay safe

They say about my country that we live in a huge spot. I see people recreate, but it irritates. My opinion is that only important jobs and companies may go on. Stay at home and do what the government say is the best option. So i hope they go to stop recre...

it seems that reducing contact by 80% is critical...

 By: cshimokita : April 8th, 2020-08:59
it's not a random percentage... in terms of infection via social contact the number is significant. "Contact" is conversation of more that one sentence in close quarters and/or physical contact. If you normally contact with 10 people a day, reduce that to...

Photographing empty cities in 2020...

 By: cshimokita : April 8th, 2020-16:43
Thanks for the thoughts and example Jeff... In one sense I can appreciate Opie's approach... the photos, when viewed today may unnecessarily add to the 'panic and emotion' that may have build up around recent events... certainly for families of affected i...
