The difference in shape between the third model 3970 and the first model 3971 may seem small at first glance, but there are actually fundamental differences.

Differences beyond the type of ①materials (P or J) and ②hands (baton or leaf) and ③dials (black or white.silver) and indexes (bar or bullet/shape)

The difference is hard to see in a wrist shot.

The difference is hard to tell even when you hold it in your hand

However, when you look at it from the back, it’s obvious. The 3rd 3970 has a screw/back, while the 3971 is a snapback.

More than anything, the way these cases are made is probably dfferent. It’s likely that NC lathes hadn't yet been introduced around 1986.

The first-generation 3971 case retains a more handmade feel than the later 3970.
I sometimes think, ”When I look at the latest Patek Philippe, the vintage ones look tarnished. But compared to well-maintained vintage models, the current models look like toys."
By the way, this photo shows the coveted two-tone dial (not mine).
