Patek Philippe

Thanks v much

Oh man. Mainly its history/design. History… Bauhaus out of post WWI German post Depression that led to concept of discretion and simplicity as luxury… which bookends the contemporaneously designed Art Deco/ornate Reverso that captures pre-crash Western capitalist optimism; both styles helped create/express modernism; I also dig that the Calatrava was the Stern family’s 1st big launch after acquiring Patek and it saw the company through the global Depression. On a design level, the clean ivory (not white) dial with center seconds (no subdial), the spade pin buckle, the super slow-turning crown, the scalloped lugs. And the caseback that opens is a cool extra. At least for me, buying a watch like Rolex celebrated a sense of achievement/adventure. Buying a Calatrava is a quieter experience that you earn in a different way.
